Rate shopping is the automated collection of competitor room prices across channels and dates, using specialized tools. The resulting data feeds pricing decisions and revenue management systems with a live view of the market.
A rate shopper checks the comp set's public prices for future dates on a schedule, normalizing room types and inclusions as far as possible. Revenue managers use it to position their own rates and to detect market-wide demand shifts early.
The classic pitfall is comparing incomparable things, a flexible breakfast-included rate against a bare non-refundable one. Good analysis fixes the comparison basis first. Competitor prices are an input, not a strategy, and copying the cheapest neighbor is how whole markets race to the bottom.
