A Property Management System (PMS) is the core software a hotel uses to manage reservations, check-ins, room assignments, billing and guest profiles. It acts as the operational hub that most other hotel technology connects to.
The PMS holds the room inventory and the reservation calendar, so it is the single source of truth for who is staying, in which room and at what rate. Front desk, housekeeping and finance teams all work from it, and modern cloud systems expose APIs so channel managers, booking engines and guest apps stay in sync.
Choosing a PMS shapes the rest of the stack. Hotels typically evaluate integration depth, migration effort and support quality before price. A common mistake is buying a cheap PMS with a closed ecosystem, which later forces manual workarounds for payments, upselling or messaging.
