A booking engine is the reservation software embedded in a hotel's own website that lets guests check availability, see rates and book directly, without going through an OTA. It is the main tool for commission-free direct revenue.
The booking engine pulls live availability and pricing from the PMS or channel manager, processes payment or guarantees the card, and writes the reservation back automatically. A good engine supports multiple languages, mobile checkout and promotional codes.
Conversion is the metric that matters. Slow loading, forced account creation or hidden fees are the typical killers. Hotels often test simplified checkout flows and price comparison widgets, since even small conversion gains compound into meaningful direct revenue over a year.
