A tourist tax is a per-person, per-night levy many cities and regions charge hotel guests, collected by the hotel and remitted to the authority. Amounts and rules vary widely by destination and hotel category.
The hotel acts as collector, charging the tax on the folio, tracking exemptions such as children or long stays where applicable, and filing periodic declarations. Rates often depend on hotel classification and season, and change frequently enough to require monitoring.
Operationally the tax must be configured correctly in the PMS and booking channels so guests see it before booking, not as a check-out surprise. Errors in either direction hurt, undercollection creates liability while overcollection creates refunds and reviews.
