Room Block

Operations

A room block is a set of rooms reserved under one agreement for a group, event or company, held at negotiated rates until a cutoff date, after which unclaimed rooms are released back for general sale.

In practice

Blocks are the operational unit of group business, weddings, conferences, tour series. The contract defines the rate, the pickup expectations and attrition clauses that determine what the organizer pays if the group fills fewer rooms than committed.

Managing blocks well means tracking pickup against the commitment as the cutoff approaches, releasing unsold rooms in time to resell them, and coordinating billing between the master account and individual guests. Sloppy block management leaks both revenue and goodwill.
