Contactless check-in is an arrival process without desk interaction, combining online registration, digital payment, identity verification and a digital key or kiosk, so guests go from door to room without queuing.
The full chain requires several pieces working together, pre-arrival data capture, payment and ID verification, room assignment automation in the PMS, and key delivery by app or kiosk. Missing any link sends the guest back to the desk, negating the promise.
It suits some properties and segments better than others, urban hotels with late arrivals and short stays benefit most, while service-led properties may prefer keeping a human welcome and automating only the paperwork. Offering it as an option satisfies both types of guest.
