BAR (Best Available Rate) is the lowest unrestricted public rate a hotel offers for a given date, typically flexible and bookable by anyone. Many other rates, such as discounts and packages, are derived from it.
BAR acts as the reference price of the day. When the revenue manager moves BAR, derived rates such as member discounts, corporate percentages and package supplements move with it, which keeps the whole rate structure coherent with one decision.
Deriving everything from BAR is convenient but has limits. Different room types and segments do not always deserve the same relative gap on every date, which is the argument behind open pricing, where each rate is set independently.
