Pickup is the number of new room nights or revenue added for a future date over a given period, for example bookings received in the last week for next month. It shows how demand is building compared with expectations.
Revenue managers read pickup reports daily or weekly to see which future dates are filling faster or slower than usual. Strong pickup for a date signals room to raise rates, weak pickup signals a need for action before it becomes a discount panic.
Pickup only makes sense against a reference, typically the same point before arrival in previous years. Raw numbers without that comparison lead to wrong conclusions, since some dates always book late by nature, such as short business stays.
